Description

The Citadel, It-Telgħa tal-Belt, Victoria, Gozo

The Citadel is visible from almost all of Gozo. Gozo was once a privileged Roman Municipality, independent of Malta and the Citadel was it’s centre.

The Citadel in Gozo which was built between 1500 BC in it’s earliest form and 1868 in it’s current form, owes its roots to the late medieval era, but the hill has been settled since Neolithic times. For centuries, the Citadel served as a sanctuary from attack by Barbary corsairs and Saracens. At several times during Gozo’s history, these raiders took its population into slavery.

After the Great Siege of 1565, the Knights set about re-fortifying the Citadel to provide refuge and defence against further attack. Until 1637, the Gozitan population was required by law to spend their nights within the Citadel for their own safety. In later, more peaceful times, this restriction was lifted and people settled below its walls, creating the prosperous town of Rabat, now known as Victoria.

The Citadel is free to visit and explore, there is also a Citadel Museum on site for visitors called The Gozo Museum of Archaeology which was founded in 1960.

Entrance to the Citadel is free, however tickets for the Museum of Archeology, Heritage Malta Citadel sites + the Citadel Visitor Centre:

– Youths (12 – 17 years), Senior Citizens (60 years & over), and Students: €3.50
– Children (6 – 11 years): €2.50
